Have you ever noticed that there are different colour stripes on milestones while travelling on the side of the road or on the highway? What do these milestones reflect, why they have coloured stripes, etc. will study in this article.

Have you ever noticed that along the road there are colourful milestones? They change their colour code at different places i.e. while travelling on the highway; these milestones keep changing their colour code. Do you know why milestones are placed on the sides of the road or on the highway? Why they change their colour code.
Milestones are a kind of stone that tells us how far our destination is from a certain point. There are no same milestones on all the roads in India: The colour code varies for highways like the National Highway, the State Highway, the streets of the district and the village roads.
Why Indian Highways have coloured milestones?

While walking on the road or while driving, if you see a milestone having the yellow strip on the upper part of it, then it is understood that you are travelling on a National highway. This means that yellow painted milestones are imposed on India's National highways only.
Do you know which Highway is known as National Highway (NH):
National Highway (NH): These are the main highways of India which provide connectivity to all cities and states. NH is maintained by the Indian Government (i.e. NHAI). The National highway is more than 70,000 km long and the North-South-East-West Corridor (NS-EW corridor) and Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) are also formed by these highways.
North-South Corridor: Extends from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir to the Southern tip of India i.e. Kanyakumari. The length of this road is 4000 km.
East-West Corridor: connects Porbandar with Silchar in Assam and the total length of this road is 3300 km.
Note that NS-EW corridors are the same corridor, not different.
Golden Quadrilateral (GQ): This highway network connects four metro cities in India - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. The total length of GQ is 5846 km.
2. Green strip on milestone indicates

When you see a green strip landmark on the side of the road, then it means that you are not on the National Highway but on the State Highway. In India, when roads are constructed or manufactured by the State then green coloured milestones are used and the maintenance of these roads is done entirely by the State.
Do you know which highway is known as State Highway (SH):
State Highway (SH): The length of the State Highway is approximately 150,000 km and is administered by the states to enter into each state and inter-connectivity in the cities.
3. Black, Blue or White strip on milestone indicates
Black, blue or white stripe on district roads
When you see a milestone with a black, blue or white strip on the roadside, then it is understood that you entered in a big city or district. At the same time maintenance of these roads comes under district or we can say that these roads are maintained only by the administration of the same city.
4. Orange colour stripe on milestone indicates
Orange colour stripe on village roads
When you see a milestone or a landmark with an orange stripe on the side of the road, then it means that you entered in the village. This strip also represents Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
From this article we come to know that various milestones are present on the highways of different colour which represents the destination from a certain place. That is whether we are travelling on State highway, National Highway or in villages etc.
