What is Food Safety Index 2019-20 by FSSAI?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) during a webinar announced the results of the second State Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2019-20 on the occasion of the World Food Safety Day (June 7).

On the occasion of World Food Safety Day (June 7), the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) during a webinar announced the results of the second State Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2019-20. The theme of the webinar was 'Food Safety is Everyone's Business'.
The event was dedicated to all the frontline workers who ensured the uninterrupted supply of the food chain during the times of global pandemic. The winners were announced in three categories--  Large States, Small States and Union Territories. 
The FSSAI also released an e-handbook on the topic 'Eat Right during COVID-19' which highlights the safe food practices to be followed by the citizens. The handbook also contains tips on health and nutrition. A detailed guidance note was also released by FSSAI on 'Food Hygiene and Safety Guidelines for Food Businesses during Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic'. The note guides the citizens on hygiene and sanitary requirements, the responsibility of management and sector-specific requirements to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the food supply chain as its safety is a collective responsibility. 
List of winners: 
1- In the Large States category, Gujarat secured the first place, Tamil Nadu second and Maharashtra third. 
2- In the Small States category, Goa secured the first place, Manipur second and Meghalaya third. 
3- In the Union Territories category, Chandigarh secured the first place, Delhi second and the Andaman Islands third. 

Parameters for ranking the states:

The states were ranked on the basis of five parameters in the 'results of the second State Food Safety Index'. These are as follows: 
1- Human Resources and Institutional Data
2- Compliance
3- Food Testing Facility
4- Training and Capacity Building
5- Consumer Empowerment

What is Food Safety Index?

In December 2018, the United Nations announced the first-ever World Food Safety Day to be celebrated on June 7, 2019. In India, Union Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan and Minister of State, Ashwini Kumar Choubey kicked off the first-ever World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2019. The event was celebrated at FSSAI headquarters in New Delhi and recognized the efforts of States, Food Businesses and individuals in promoting the food safety for human consumption. 

What is FSSAI?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ensures the safe availability of food for human consumption. FSSAI is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The body is responsible for promoting and protecting public health through various regulations and supervisions of food safety.
Rita Teotia is the current Chairperson for FSSAI and Arun Singhal is the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for FSSAI. The FSSAI is headquartered in New Delhi and has 6 regional offices-- Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin, and Chennai.
