The Mahavir Chakra (MVC) was instituted on 26 Jan 1950 to recognise the act of gallantry in the presence of the enemy. MVC is the second-highest military Award in India. Three gallantry awards in India are The Param Vir Chakra, The Mahavir Chakra, and The Vir Chakra. The conclusion of British Rule in India saw the end of the old institution of British awards and honours. British awards were basically made to please the anti-India elements. So after Independence; India changed this practice and introduced the first three gallantry awards namely; 1. The Param Vir Chakra 2. The Mahavir Chakra 3 .
